Spreading Warmth This Season: My Experience Volunteering at the Salvation Army Kettle

There’s something special about the sound of a Salvation Army kettle bell during the holiday season. It’s more than a familiar tradition—it’s a call to community, compassion, and generosity. This year, I had the chance to step on the other side of the kettle and volunteer a few hours to help support the Salvation Army’s vital programs.

Bundled up in my red and white scarf, I stood beside the iconic red kettle greeting people as they passed by—some rushing, some strolling, some already carrying bags full of gifts and groceries. What surprised me most wasn’t how much people gave, but how willingly they gave. Pocket change, folded bills, or simply a warm smile—every gesture carried a bit of kindness.

Volunteering reminded me that even a small amount of time can make a real difference. The funds raised through kettle donations support food banks, shelters, youth programs, and families facing difficult times. It’s easy to forget just how many people in our community rely on these services until you’re out there witnessing generosity in action.

There was a moment when a little kid tugged on there mom's coat and asked if they could put their own coin in the kettle. Their face lit up when the bell rang—proof that giving feels just as good (maybe even better) than receiving.

I left my shift grateful, energized, and reminded of what the season is truly about. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering but haven’t taken the step yet, I truly recommend it. A couple of hours can help brighten someone’s entire holiday.
